Elementary student in Cook brings firearm to school
by Than Tibbetts, Minnesota Public RadioSt. Paul, Minn. — An elementary student in Cook, Minn. was removed from school Tuesday after officials discovered the child was in possession of a weapon.
The St. Louis County Sheriff's Department was notified at 10:33 a.m. that the weapon was found at sometime between 8:30 and 9 a.m., a sheriff's department spokesman said.
Superintendent Charles Rick said school officials determined it was not an "immediate threat" and did not require any action beyond removing the student from school, Rick said.
"It was an errant judgment made by someone to bring that to school," he said.
The child was initially released to his parents, but was later taken into custody, police said.
Police continue to investigate the incident. Formal charges are expected Wednesday.
