St. Paul, Minn. — A 27-year-old man and 23-year-old woman have pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the death of a Red Lake man in October 2009.
Kelly James Maxwell and Natalie Renee Delores Ann Smith, a couple, were indicted by a federal grand jury in November.
According to court documents, Maxwell and Smith killed Curtis Leslie Charles Heinonen, 21, on Oct. 1 and left his naked body under several logs in a yard. Authorities found shoes, pants and boxer shorts in Smith's yard two blocks away. When asked about Heinonen, Smith told authorities she and her boyfriend had beaten him.
