UnitedHealth Group CEO among insurance leaders called to testify before Congress
by Bill Catlin, Minnesota Public RadioSt. Paul, Minn. — Democratic members of Congress want to hear from the head of Minnetonka-based UnitedHealth Group and the CEOs of three other large for-profit health insurers.
The House Energy and Commerce Committee also sought the top executives of Aetna, Humana, and WellPoint Inc to testify at a public hearing March 23rd.
The move comes amid intensifying Democratic focus on the health insurance industry in the battle over health reform.
The committee also requested internal documents and other information about coverage for individuals in the health insurance market.
President Barack Obama wednesday is expected to lay out his plan for moving ahead on stalled healthcare reform legislation.
Industry leaders are slated to meet with U.S. Health Secretary Kathleen Sebelius at the White House on Thursday.
