St. Paul, Minn. — Minnesota medical device manufacturer Guidant is facing criminal charges filed by the U.S. Department of Justice, and medical technology industry analyst Jan Wald told MPR's Tom Crann the incident is another sign that the sector has seen better days.

The DOJ says Guidant knew three models of its implantable defibrilators could kill patients, but the Arden Hills-based subsidiary of Boston Scientific didn't inform the Food and Drug Administration about the lethal problems, as it should have.

The Guidant lawsuit is the latest story of Minnesota's struggling medical device industry.
