St. Paul, Minn. — Over the next three years, Minnesota Opera presents Gaetano Donizetti's Tudor trilogy: Anna Bolena, Maria Stuarda, and Roberto Devereux.

Kevin Newbury directs this season's production of Roberto Devereux, an opera that could rightly be called "Queen Elizabeth," a powerful, vengeful role sung by soprano Brenda Harris.

Ahead of opening night on January 30th, Classical MPR's John Birge spoke with Newbury and Harris about real-life Tudor history, on-stage Tudor heartbreak, and how "The Virgin Queen" may -- or may not -- have been "The Original Cougar."
