U.S. Bank customers use federal mortgage relief plan
Minneapolis-based U.S. Bank is now helping about 25 percent of the borrowers eligible for a federal plan to reduce their mortgage payments.
The Home Affordable Modification Program enables eligible borrowers to refinance onerous mortgages and get more affordable monthly payments.
The program commits $75 billion to keep up to 4 million Americans in their homes by preventing foreclosures.
As of the end of December, U.S. Bank had offered modified mortgages to one-quarter of some 29,000 eligible borrowers, which is in line with the national average.
U.S. Bank reported having far fewer bad mortgage loans than its peers. Wells Fargo, for instance, has some 350,000 customers eligible for loan modifications. Bank of America has more than 1 million such borrowers.
Nationwide, the loan modification program has reduced mortgage payments for more than 850,000 homeowners. Their median payment reduction exceeds $500.
