Minn. lawmakers look to battle obesity

Members of the Education and Health committees in the state House of Representatives are meeting to talk about policy solutions to combat obesity.

Rising obesity in both adults and children are projected to make Minnesota health care costs spiral up in the coming years. Obesity brings with it greater risks of heart disease, stroke and cancer.

A bipartisan group of state lawmakers will use a Tuesday hearing at the Capitol to discuss their policy recommendations focusing on school and community physical activity and nutrition policies to encourage weight loss. They say their proposals will leave room for flexibility in how communities implement them, and have no fiscal impact on the state.
