Mpls faith, business communities raising money for homeless

Members of the faith and business communities of Minneapolis have teamed up to raise $350,000 to help the homeless.

The Downtown Council and a group of more than a dozen churches, mosques and a synagogue will focus their efforts on the Currie Avenue homeless shelter downtown.

Downtown Council president Sam Grabarski says the money will pay for case workers who will help shelter residents - many of whom have physical and mental disabilities -- stay off the streets.

"For every $35,000, ten to 15 people are going to be able to move into group residential housing where they are going to be able to be taken care of, get their medicine and if they are able to overcome their disability, become employed," Grabarski said.

Grabarski says downtown companies have already raised nearly $100,000 toward their goal.
