Regional Spotlight: Joyce Yang plays Brahms

St. Paul, Minn. — The Chopin Society presented the silver medalist in the 12th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition and a "million-volt presence" Joyce Yang in concert a few weeks ago. Part of her recital included a collection of pieces by Johannes Brahms. Not only did she play these works as if they'd been written for her, she addressed the audience with comments that showed the depth of her knowledge and artistry.

• Joyce Yang: A native of Seoul, Korea, Joyce Yang moved to the U.S. with her mother when she was 10 to study at Juilliard. In 2005, she won the Silver Medal at the 12th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. Highlights of last season include a "knockout performance" with The New York Philharmonic under Lorin Maazel and a recital in the Tonhalle in Zurich hailed for its "absolutely astonishing virtuosity." Joyce's debut disc on Harmonia Mundi includes Bach, Liszt, Scarlatti, and Carl Vine.
