The University of Minnesota has opened a new medical biosciences building on the school's Twin Cities campus.

The 115,000 square foot building will house laboratories for at least 210 medical researchers. It took two years to build, at a cost of $79 million.

Harry Orr, director of the U's Institute for Transitional Nueroscience, said at an opening ceremony Tuesday the building will bring together researchers in neuroscience and immunology who were previously spread across campus.

"The closer we are together the more often we bump into each other, and the more often we bump into each other the more often we exchange ideas," said Orr.

This summer the university will break ground nearby for another medical research facility. It's a part of the U's plan to create a biomedical discovery district that will someday be home to 1,200 researchers.
