Minneapolis declares 3 more unofficial winners in election

Minneapolis officials declared three more unofficial winners Monday afternoon in the city's first ever election using instant runoff voting.

City council president Barbara Johnson got fewer than 50 percent of the first choice vote on election night, so elections officials had to count the second choice ballots. After the tally, Johnson received more than 52 percent of the vote and retained her 4th Ward council seat.

Newcomer Meg Tuthill was confirmed as the winner of the 10th Ward council race. It was an open seat. And elections officials declared Anita Tabb the unofficial winner of the District 4 Park Board commissioner race. Tabb was the only candidate on the ballot.

Elections officials say the hand count went slowly because voters offered more than 200 people as write-in candidates.

The winners will be official when all of the ballots are counted and the election is certified on Dec. 21.
