Califano: Parents are big influence on kids' alcohol, drug choices

St. Paul, Minn. — It's a pretty good likelihood that every child will be offered alcohol or drugs by the time they graduate high school. To parents, that fact may seem daunting.

But author Joseph Califano maintains that parents have a high degree of power and influence when it comes to the choices their children make about drugs.

Califano is a veteran of three presidential administrations, and founder of the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University.

Califano's new book is "How to Raise a Drug-Free Child: The Straight Dope for Parents." He spoke with MPR's Tom Crann.
