Minn. colleges receive grants to help low-income parents
The U.S. Department of Education awarded four Minnesota colleges with $216,000 today to help low-income parents attend school, as part of $10.7 million in similar grants nationwide.
The grants will provide campus-based childcare services for low-income parents.
The Minnesota recipients include Inver Hills Community College, Minneapolis Community and Technical College, St. Paul College, and Winona State University.
"These grants aim to increase the number of low-income Americans attending postsecondary schools by eliminating barriers to enrollment - the financial cost of quality child care as well as the emotional stress of finding excellent care that is also accessible to their school," U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan said in a statement.
Over 100 colleges and universities nationwide received grant money.
