Minn. colleges urged to sell American apparel

That University of Minnesota sweatshirt on the sales rack at the campus bookstore might just be made in Minnesota, or at least the United States.

After Friday, public colleges and universities will have to make extra effort to sell U.S.-made apparel in campus stores. A state law to that effect takes hold Saturday.

The law passed this spring by the Legislature requires the sale of domestically manufactured clothes to the extent possible.

The law doesn't carry any penalties for sales of foreign goods. But colleges will be required to report to the Legislature on the efforts they're making to be in compliance.
