Minn. AG Swanson speaks against mandatory arbitration

July 22, 2009

St. Paul, Minn. (AP) — Minnesota Attorney General Lori Swanson heads to Washington on Wednesday to testify against mandatory

arbitration requirements in credit card contracts. Swanson will testify at a hearing of the U.S. House Domestic Policy Subcommittee.

She will ask Congress to ban mandatory arbitration clauses in consumer contracts.

Her appearance comes two days before National Arbitration Forum of St. Louis Park, Minn., will stop arbitrating credit card debts and other consumer collection disputes nationwide under a legal settlement with Swanson's office.

Swanson sued the company last week over its handling of debt disputes between consumers and credit card companies.
