Meatpacking plant in South St. Paul losing 75 jobs

Stock Yards Meat Packing Co. is planning a consolidation that could mean 75 food-industry jobs moved out of South St. Paul.

Christina Koliopoulos is a spokeswoman for Stock Yards Meat's parent company, U.S. Foodservice Corp. in Rosemont, Ill. She says an unspecified number of the jobs will be transferred to Plymouth while others will be eliminated.

The operation in South St. Paul currently has about 125 workers.

Stock Yards Meat supplies fine cuts of meat to steakhouses, casinos and high-end restaurants.

Don Seaquist is the president of United Food and Commercial Workers Local 789, which represents the plant's 47 meat workers and buyers. He says the workers haven't been given many details besides notice of a restructuring.
