Grass fire prompts evacuation of 50 homes in Andover

May 31, 2009

Andover, Minn. (AP) — Authorities say about 50 homes in a northern Twin Cities suburb had to be evacuated on Sunday while crews worked to contain a grass fire in Anoka County.

High winds and dry conditions helped the fire spread easily across a field near Andover.

Anoka County sheriff's lead dispatcher Shelly Peetz says as of Sunday evening the fire had stopped spreading. She says rain in the area was also helping contain the fire.

It isn't clear how many acres burned, but a KSTP-TV helicopter captured video of fire crews working to protect a line of homes that were being threatened by the fire.

Peetz said no homes had burned and no injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire hasn't yet been determined.
