Shell from Camp Ripley lands on couple's property
Camp Ripley has made some changes in artillery firing after a 102-pound shell landed on a rural Pillager couple's property.
No one was hurt. The shell missed Rich and Kathy Nelson's house on April 7 but damaged some trees.
The Nelsons weren't home, but a construction crew installing cabinets was taking a break when the shell flew over the garage.
Capt. Ross Nieber of Camp Ripley says BAE Systems, a defense company, was testing weapons that day. The company fired eight inert rounds, and one of the rounds flew about 800 meters off Camp Ripley property onto the Nelsons' property.

Nieber says Camp Ripley temporarily shut down its artillery firing after the incident. The camp has added a larger buffer to companies testing weapons and is changing the direction that weapons are shot.
