Crest estimate lower for Red River in Fargo

The National Weather Service said the Red River at Fargo Moorhead will crest slightly lower than earlier expected.

Officials predict a second crest of 38 to 39 by next weekend, about a foot lower than earlier projections.

Less water than expected is flowing into the Red River from a tributary, the Wild Rice, according to the National Weather Service.

Most levees in Fargo Moorhead are built to withstand a crest of up to 42 feet. The Red River first crested in Fargo Moorhead late last month just under 41 feet.

Light rain is expected this week in the Red River Valley, but forecasters anticipate little accumulation.

Significant flooding is still occurring in rural areas. Officials in Cass County, N.D, have requested Coast Guard assistance to help with evacuations this week.

Over the weekend, officials began evacuating the North Dakota veteran's home near Lisbon about 70 miles west of Fargo, as the Sheyenne River approached record levels.
