Bethel students cancel trip due to violence in Mexicoby Tim Post, Minnesota Public Radio
St. Paul, Minn. — A group from Bethel University in St. Paul has altered a spring break service trip because of ongoing violence between drug cartels in Mexico.
Fifty-five students from Bethel intended to travel to Chihuahua City in Mexico for a community service spring break trip, but after hearing of violence in that city and in the border towns the group needed to travel through, Bethel officials rerouted the group to El Paso Texas.
Amber Knutson, a junior at Bethel, said they're helping build affordable housing in El Paso.
"So now we're still able to serve, even though it was not where we were planning to go and where our hearts are, but instead still being able to serve and use our spring break that way," Knutson said.
The group is expected to return to Minnesota on Sunday.
