Minn. city considers in-city golf cart travel

Golf carts might be a common sight on city streets in Sun Belt states, but a Minnesota city is considering allowing them on roadways, too.

The New Ulm City Council is scheduled to review the issue this month. The idea of allowing golf carts on city streets was first raised in 2008, when gasoline prices hovered around $4 a gallon.

Two other cities in the area, North Mankato and Wells, debated the issue in 2007, but ultimately decided against it.

Currently, only a few Minnesota cities allow golf carts to travel in-city. Those that do require such things as installation of seatbelts, turn-signal lights and certain usage limitations.

New Ulm City Council Member Todd Olson says they don't want them running down highways or trying to get up hills.
