Task force announces plan to create 'green jobs'

A coalition of legislators and business leaders wants to create a new state government resource center to promote the growth of "green-collar" jobs.

Members of the Minnesota Green Jobs Task Force unveiled dozens of recommendations today aimed at boosting jobs related to renewable energy and environmental conservation.

Rep. Jeremy Kalin (DFL-North Branch) says Minnesota was slow to respond last year when a European company was looking for a location to build wind turbines. Kalin says a new Green Enterprise Authority could coordinate the efforts of several state agencies act quickly to attract new jobs.

"That Green Enterprise Authority will put a name to that inter agency collaboration that needs to happen in the 21st century economy, an economy that's fast paced, that rewards innovations within days and weeks and doesn't wait for requests for proposals to come out," said Kalin.

The task force recommendations also include tax incentives and bonding proposals for renewable energy projects.

Kalin and other legislators did not provide an estimated cost of the proposals.
