Fletcher went over budget in pre-convention probe

January 14, 2009

St. Paul, Minn. — (AP) - Ramsey County Sheriff Bob Fletcher spent more than $305,000 to investigate groups that may have been planning to cause trouble at the Republican National Convention.

And he didn't tell elected officials -- who were supposed to give him permission to spend the funds.

On Tuesday, Fletcher revealed that he spent the money to pay overtime or temporary salaries to investigators tracking the groups. In all, he said he spent about $400,000 more than expected.

County commissioners agreed Tuesday to cover the spending after Fletcher said he expected to be reimbursed with part of a $50 million federal grant for convention security. City officials said the final request to the federal government isn't final.

Fletcher said he was glad he kept his spending secret, especially since at least one City Council member has been critical of pre-convention raids. ---
