Crew pulls locomotive from Mississippi River

Dresbach, Minn. (AP) — Railroad officials say a crew has pulled a locomotive from the Mississippi River after last week's train collision.

Mike LoVecchio, a spokesman for Canadian Pacific Railway Ltd., says crews pulled the locomotive up the embankment on Sunday morning. He says the temperature with the wind chill was 28 degrees below zero at the time.

The locomotive will be cut up for scrap on the site near Dresbach.

LoVecchio says the removal of the locomotive is the last large step in the cleanup process, though the railroad will work with state officials on continued environmental monitoring at the site.

The collision on Wednesday caused about 25,000 gallons of liquid fertilizer to leak into the river. The cause of the collision is still under investigation.
