Train derails in southeastern Minnesotaby Sea Stachura, Minnesota Public Radio
Dresbach, Minn. — La Crescent Fire Department officials say a propane leak at the site of the train derailment along the Mississippi is limited to a small tank.
Two Canadian Pacific trains collided early this morning at Dresbach, Minn., north of La Crescent.
La Crescent Fire Chief Bernie Buehler says one of the trains struck a propane tank located near the track.
"Not on a boxcar but a 1000 gallon tank that on land on a little building that's underneath a tank car that is leaking. We're trying to make an assessment now as to how full that is and when it will be empty so we can proceed," said Buehler.
Canadian Pacific says one of the trains had 96 empty cars and four loaded cars. No one was injured in the crash.
A portion of a locomotive is in the Mississippi, but no rail cars fell into the river.
The Minnesota Department of Transportation has closed the westbound Dresbach exit as a safety precaution.
