Carbon monoxide poisoning kills 3

Two men and a boy are dead in Minneapolis after being overcome by carbon monoxide in a north Minneapolis home.

Rescuers were called to a home in the 1600 block of Girard Avenue north. They found the three unconscious inside, carried them out into the yard and tried to revive them.

Both men were pronounced dead at the scene and the boy was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Minneapolis police spokesman Sergeant Jesse Garcia said that rescuers found a large gasoline powered generator running in the basement. The utilities had been cut off to the residence and the generator was powering lights and appliances in the home.

Garcia said that the cooler weather has more people closing up their homes and finding ways to stay warm. He urged the public to use caution as the heating season begins.

"People need to get out and get their carbon monoxide detectors and place them in various locations in their house. This is a colorless and odorless gas that will overcome them without them even knowing it," Garcia said.

State law now requires all homes to have carbon monoxide detectors near sleeping areas.
