Highway still closed after Houston County train derailment
by Steven John, Minnesota Public RadioSt. Paul, Minn. — Highway 26 along the Mississippi River remains closed from Brownsville to the Iowa border following Tuesday's train derailment.
Twenty-seven cars from an Iowa, Chicago and Eastern Railroad train left the tracks near Reno causing some ethanol tanker cars to spill their cargo. Houston County Sheriff Doug Ely said crews hope to have one lane of traffic open later on Wednesday.
"Now they're in the process of recovery and trying to get some of the cars uprighted so they can get to the remaining cars that are full of ethanol yet so they can unload those car to car," Ely said.
No one was injured in the derailment and there were no evacuations ordered. The cause of the derailment is still under investigation.
