Repair to gusset plates begins on Winona bridgeby Sea Stachura, Minnesota Public Radio
St. Paul, Minn. — Repairs on the Winona bridge will begin this week.
The contractor Edward Kraemer and Sons will repair 15 gusset plates on the Highway 43 bridge in Winona.
The bridge was temporarily closed last month after MnDOT bridge inspectors found corroded and bowed gusset plates. Corroded gusset plates on the bridge had been reported since 2006.
Currently, car traffic is allowed on the bridge, but truck and pedestrian traffic is restricted.
MnDOT will pay Kraemer and Sons just over $100,000 to repair the gusset plates by July 31. Wiss Janney Elstner Associates has also been contracted to oversee the project.
Other repairs to the bridge like joint cleaning and sidewalk replacement will not be complete until early fall.
