Cases of abandoned horses on the rise

by Cathy Wurzer, Minnesota Public Radio

Pictures of dead and starving horses drew media attention in the state last month when several horses were found abandoned on a farm in Todd County. Most of those horses died; a few are being nursed back to health at the Minnesota Hooved Animal Rescue Foundation.

Across the state, the number of abandoned and abused horses has been rising. It is a problem seen across the country as well.

Morning Edition host Cathy Wurzer talked with three experts about what is happening.

Wade Hanson is an investigator with the Animal Humane Society in the Twin Cities, Julie Wilson is an equine veterinarian at the University of Minnesota, and Krishona Martinson is a University of Minnesota Extention Educator.
