The campaign for a new GI Bill

Broadcast: Midmorning, 05/12/2008, 10:06 a.m.

St. Paul, Minn. — A new bill that would increase educational benefits for veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan is before Congress.

But the Department of Defense and the Bush administration are concerned the bill is too costly and will be hard to administer.

Midmorning also examines whether the incentives being offered by the military are having an effect on recruiting efforts.

Guests

Paul Rieckhoff: Executive director of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America.

Cindy Williams: Principal research scientist with the Security Studies Program at MIT, and author of "Filling the Ranks: Transforming the U.S. Military Personnel System."
