Mpls. girl's killer sentenced to life in prison

Minneapolis — (AP) - The man convicted a second time in the shooting death of an 11-year-old Minneapolis girl as she did her homework is sentenced to life in prison.

Myon Burrell, 22, was sentenced Thursday in Hennepin County District Court in the killing of Tyesha Edwards six years ago.

A life sentence in Minnesota is 30 years in prison, but Burrell will not become eligible for parole for 50 years due to extra prison terms following his life sentence.

Edwards was killed in November 2002 as she was sitting at her kitchen table.

Burrell was convicted in 2003 of first-degree murder, but the state Supreme Court set aside the conviction in 2005. It ruled a statement he made to police was inadmissible.

Earlier this year, Burrell was convicted of first-degree murder and first-degree murder for the benefit of a gang in Edwards's death.
