Man convicted a second time for killing Minneapolis girl

Minneapolis — (AP) - A Minneapolis man faces life in prison after he was convicted a second time in the killing of 11-year-old Tyesha Edwards six years ago.

A Hennepin County district judge on Wednesday convicted Myon Burrell on one count of first-degree murder and two counts of first-degree murder for benefit of a gang.

Burrell, 23, was also convicted of two counts of attempted first-degree murder. He can be sentenced to life in prison without the possiblity of parole. Prosecutors claim Burrell was shooting at another gang member when a stray bullet struck Edwards as she did her homework at her dining room table in Minneapolis.

Burrell was convicted in 2003 of first-degree murder, but the state Supreme Court set aside the conviction because a statement he made to police was inadmissible.

Before the current trial, prosecutors said they case was even stronger this time.
