Local arts organizations receive grantsby Euan Kerr, Minnesota Public Radio
St. Paul, Minn. — The Chicago-based Joyce Foundation is giving $50,000 to each of three Twin Cities arts organizations to commission work by artists of color.
Public Art St. Paul will use the money to fund a six-mile long photo show along University Ave. by photographer Wing Young Huie.
Ragamala Music and Dance Theater will commission a piece from a Balinese choreographer.
The Walker Art Center will commission hip-hop artist Marc Bamuthi Joseph to create a performance.
The Joyce Foundation's Ellen Alberding said the fact that the Twin Cities is getting three of four awards available this year was impressive.
"The Twin Cities just seems to be producing great work, great projects," Alberding said. "The arts organizations that are getting the money from us have wonderful projects, and they have attracted the interest and participation and partnership of some extremely talented artists."
This is the fifth year of the Joyce Awards, which have totaled $1 million since they began.
