Federal judge hears lawsuit stemming from Willmar immigration raids

January 9, 2008

Minneapolis — A federal judge in Minneapolis hears arguments today in a lawsuit stemming from an immigration raid in Willmar, Minn., last April that resulted in dozens of arrests.

Centro Legal, which serves the Latino community, filed the suit on behalf more than 50 Hispanics, including 16 children, who claim their rights were violated. The suit claims agents singled out people based on race and used force and trickery to enter their homes, instead of obtaining warrants or proper consent.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement says agents involved in the raid acted within the law.
