Willmar hospital worker dies after injury

A medical records worker at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar has died of injuries suffered when a machine fell on her.

The husband of Susan Leukam, 51, of Belgrade, said an automatic filing machine fell on her at work on Friday.

Don Leukam said co-workers found his wife unresponsive in the hospital basement. He said she was revived and airlifted to Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, where she died on Monday.

The hospital's chief executive, Lorry Massa, said occupational safety officials are investigating. Massa said the hospital will work with police and other agencies to find out what happened.

Don Leukam said his wife wasn't scheduled to work Friday, but volunteered to go in to cover other shifts while people went shopping after Thanksgiving.

"She's going to be missed," he said. "I don't really know what happened, but I want to know just for closure."
