Commemorating 125 years of the Schubert Club
One-hundred-twenty-five years ago, former Gov. Alexander Ramsey's daughter and her friends formed a club to bring culture and refinement to the rough and young city of St. Paul.
At first known as the "Musical Society" and then "Ladies Musicale," the group switched its name in 1888 to the Schubert Club. Over its history, the organization has brought some of the greatest names in classical music to St. Paul. Jascha Heifetz, Vladimir Horowitz, Artur Rubenstein, Leontyne Price, Alfred Brendel, Itzhak Perlman and many other legendary artists have all played recitals under the auspices of the Schubert Club.
On Friday cellist Yo-Yo Ma will be at the Ordway Center in St. Paul for his seventh Schubert Club recital to help celebrate the organization's many years as one of Minnesota's most important cultural institutions.
The group is also publishing a commemorative book of historical photographs and essays, "The Schubert Club 125th Anniversary: Musings and Memories." A few of the book's contributers stopped by the Minnesota Public Radio studios to share their reflectons on a century and a quarter of the Schubert Club.
