The oldest first-time novelist in history?

St. Paul, Minn. — Millard Kaufman's publicist demurs slightly when the 90-year-old's possible world record comes up. McSweeney's Books says Kaufman may be the oldest first-time novelist.

Even if he isn't the first, publishing a book in your ninth decade is still quite an achievement.

Kaufman had been a Hollywood screenwriter and the co-creator of Mr. Magoo before writing his satire, "Bowl of Cherries," which was published recently.

The Current's Mary Lucia talked to Kaufman about one of his biggest films, "Raintree County," and one of Mary's favorite actors, the film's star Montgomery Clift.
