Campaign 2008

Challenger pleased Sen. Johnson to run again

State Rep. Joel Dykstra, R-Canton, says if he wins the GOP nomination, he will look forward to seeing the senator on the campaign trail.

Sioux Falls, S.D. (AP) — Dykstra says Johnson's medical condition is irrelevant to the race. "He's well enough to serve. He's well enough to run. That won't influence my campaign strategy in any way."

Asked whether he thinks there will be candidate debates with Johnson, Dykstra says debates are a part of the election process but that it's too early to predict what will happen. Dykstra says he might never catch up with Johnson in terms of fundraising but that he can give South Dakota voters a meaningful choice between candidates of differing philosophies.
