The 1918 influenza epidemic killed perhaps 100 million people worldwide, but some communities managed to avoid any deaths at all. In considering new guidelines for dealing with another flu pandemic, the CDC considered research that theorized why some lived and others died.

Guests

Arnold Monto: Professor of epidemiology in the school of public health at the University of Michigan. He co-authored a study on communities in 1918 which survived the flu pandemic.

Elizabeth McClure: Medical director for Office of Emergency Response at the University of Minnesota.
