Jay Heikes and Ordinary Culture
by Mary Lucia, Minnesota Public RadioSt. Paul, Minn. — Jay Heikes moved to Minneapolis from Ann Arbor in the late nineties. He played in some rock bands, worked at a local print shop and tried to make it as an artist. He then did what a lot of artists do -- he went to grad school and scraped by financially. But then something happened to him that doesn't happen to a lot of other artists. He got into the Whitney Biennial.
And now, a guy who once worked installing art at the Walker Art Center is getting to see his own art on display there. Mary Lucia talked to Jay Heikes about his changed life.
