The World Cup sparks national pride in Germany

by Cathy Wurzer, Minnesota Public Radio
July 4, 2006

Today is July 4, a national holiday in this country celebrating the day in 1776 when our founding fathers declared independence from Great Britain. There will be lots of parades and fireworks and displays of patriotism.

Today is a day of patriotic pride in Germany as well, where the home team is playing against Italy in the semifinals of the World Cup soccer tournament. Morning Edition host Cathy Wurzer talked with MPR's Julie Siple, who is spending the year in Germany on a reporting fellowship, about how the World Cup is changing Germany.
