NPR, others considering online "music discovery" site

Posted at 9:32 AM on December 15, 2006 by Jon Gordon (1 Comments)

NPR.org is asking readers to participate in an online survey to help it craft an online music discovery service.

A group of public radio stations from around the country, along with NPR and other public radio producers, is considering creating a Web site that is devoted to music, music discovery, and musical artists. The group would contribute music features and programming to this site. This will be a destination site focused on music discovery.

Here are some of the features being considered:

Listen to a stream of this public radio station or service
Listen to a stream of another public radio station or service
Listen to or watch a stream of a live concert broadcast
Listen to or watch video of an artist's performance from a public radio station's studio
Listen to or watch video of an artist interview conducted by public radio
Search for music-related photos
Seek out new music
Read articles about music or artists
Read music reviews online about new CD releases
Read concert reviews online
Purchase CDs online
Purchase music for download
Purchase a book about music or artists online
Read blogs about music or artists
Write in your own blog about music or artists
Listen to samples of music without paying for it
Obtain concert information in your area
Download podcasts about music or artists
Research music or artists
Read CD reviews from other fans
Read concert reviews from other fans
Listen to audio news stories profiling artists and their music
Participate in music forums with fans of the same type(s) of music that you like
Follow a link to an artist or band’s profile on a site like MySpace

I think the "The Current" 89.3 FM does a great job in making the music available, but today I was listening to Marketplace, and it took a while to find the song that played the segway. I think it was
Interstate 5 - The Wedding Present.
It would have been great if I could tag that song, and I woul get more info. I am old school. I buy CDs, and I also like going to my local independent stores. An on-line store is not bad, but I would not
guarantee that I would ever buy anything.
