This seems like it's one of those "once-in-a-decade" ice storm. I know they get ice storms every year in that part of the country, but very rarely have I seen so many icing reports of greater than 1 inch. How frequently does the U.S. get these kinds of storms?
Chris, without thumbing through historical records, my own thoughts would suspect that from Oklahoma City through northern Arkansas and Kentucky they would get a coating of ice two to perhaps three times a winter season, similar to the potential for the Twin Cities getting dumped on with a significant snowfall, say six inches in 24 hours.
This storm is indeed noteworthy for the west to east extent and major ice accumulation. It was fortunate that the winds weren't too bad.
Although an ice (or "a nice", depending on your viewpoint) storm occurs across the Midsouth and parts of the Midwest not infrequently, it seems like this storm is one of those once-in-a-decade or once-in-a-generation storm with not only the areal extent of the icing, but the depth of it. I can't recall from recent years not only hearing about 1- to 2-inch ice accumulation amounts, but how large of an area those amounts cover.
