Tropical storm Hanna is making her way towards the Carolinas this afternoon with rain bands already rotating into Charleston, SC. The path of Hanna will take the center of circulation along the Atlantic coastline. Saturday and into Saturday night, heavy rain and gusty winds are likely from Philadelphia to Boston. Should be a wet period for the US Open Tennis Tournament.
Rainfall Potential next thirty-six hours
As Hanna continues to move northeast away from New England rain will end on Sunday, but not before a generous soaking from the Carolinas to Maine.
Meanwhile, the upper Midwest will remain in a general pattern that favors cooler than normal temperatures and occasional opportunities for showers. The Twin Cities area is approaching a precipitation deficit of nearly six inches for 2008. Compare that to Milwaukee, where despite having less than an inch of moisture for August, has accumulated more than thirty four inches of precipitation for the year. That is nine and a half inches above normal.
One final note, Chicago was doused with nearly three inches of rain on Thursday from the remains of Gustav.
Past twenty-four hour precipitation estimates.
