Mandatory Evacuations-Voluntary

Posted at 11:40 AM on September 13, 2008 by Craig Edwards

I'm curious about the web headline which claimed Texans were surprised by Ike's ferocity! Even more befuddling is the concept that officials ordered mandatory evacution, but the decision is up to you! That really means, emergency responders will come to assist only when conditions safely allow.

Maybe I am too close to the news story as a meteorologist, but this forecast for a nasty hurricane was dead on for about three days.

What you may have missed in this morning's weather news is the heavy rainfall in northern Illinois, including the Chicago area. More heavy rain is likely in the next thirty-six hours for this already flooded region.
