On such a winter's day

Posted at 12:28 PM on January 4, 2008 by Craig Edwards

While Old Man winter is disguised in sheep’s clothing in Minnesota, you would not be safe and warm if you were in LA. Finally, a significant winter storm is battering the Pacific coast all the way down to southern California. Moisture is a welcome site after a record dry water year, but not the extreme deluge that could cause widespread havoc early in this New Year.

Temperatures more than 20 degrees above normal at daybreak on Saturday could help propel the mercury close to record levels in the Twin Cities on Saturday afternoon. The record high for January 5th is 43 degrees set in 1898 and tied in 1984. Melting snow forming a misty overcast could stall the readings close to 40 at mid day.

Recognizing that often times a busy weekend schedule results in a distraction away from the weather forecast, I must caution that there is potential for a sloppy rain/snow mix late on Monday night and snow on Tuesday. Don’t get too giddy about this mild weekend. We still have along ride ahead of us for this winter season.
