Cold air typical as a La Nina signature

Posted at 8:42 AM on January 11, 2008 by Mark Seeley (4 Comments)

Looks like an invasion of arctic air is in the cards for later next week. Outbreaks of polar air from the higher latitudes are a signature pattern of La Nina, and the current episode (moderate in strength) is expected to last until the April to June period, at least according to NOAA's Climate Prediction Center. I don't think we'll set any state record values for cold next week but by Friday and Saturday we may see some -30 F or colder in the northeast sections. Statewide record values for the 3rd week of January range from -47 degrees F to -57 degrees F.

I suspect that Winter Carnival planners will be glad to see the cold air settle in, especially if it lasts for the balance of the month. The medium range graphical forecasts can be found at a number of web sites including the Unisys one
