Award winning observer

Congratulations to long time Springfield, Minnesota weather observer Richard A. Feser upon receiving the prestigious Thomas Jefferson Award. Richard has been the volunteer weather observer for the National Weather Service in Springfield since October 1, 1964.

Only six observers were honored with this award for 2007. There are about 11,700 volunteer weather observers in the country, taking daily measurements of temperature, precipitation, snowfall and river levels.

From 1776 to 1816, Thomas Jefferson recorded daily weather observations. Benjamin Franklin and George Washington were also known for their documentation of observed weather.

The Award will be presented by John Ogren, the Deputy Director for the National Weather Service Central Region Headquarters, at a ceremony in Springfield today.
