Tonight the April Americana Showcase fills the stage at Rochester's Civic Theater with five of Minnesota's finest and hardest working young songwriters - Molly Maher, Adam Levy, Darren Jackson, Jeremy Messersmith and the series host, Brandon Sampson.
The Americana Showcase represents Sampson's effort to bring more of the music he loves to southeastern Minnesota. More recently, the series has staged shows at the James J. Hill Library in St. Paul with the next performance scheduled there for April 9th.
Tonight's show was recorded in Rochester in November of 2009, and it crowds the stage with talent.
Each performer stays busy with multiple projects - Messersmith drove 22 hours to play 4 shows at the SXSW Festival in Austin, Texas - an experience he said was "like putting a fork in an electrical outlet." Maher leads a band called the Disbelievers. They've been playing every Wednesday night at Nye's in Minneapolis since 2006. Jackson is known for his work as Kid Dakota and with the Hopefuls, and Levy for leading The Honeydogs and more recently focusing on younger audiences with Bunny Clogs. As a teenager, Sampson founded the band Six Mile Grove with his brother and their friends in tiny Lyle, Minnesota.
Tonight they leave their bands behind to trade songs in a casual, creative atmosphere for an enthusiastic audience. Listen for the Americana Showcase at 6pm on Radio Heartland.
This show will be repeated Wednesday, April 7th at 1pm.
so where the heck is the monday blog mike? life is wrong!!!
Tim... so glad it's not just me. I sent an email to Mike about 30 minutes ago, but I'm not seeing Barbara's blog either! Phew... it always makes me feel better to know I'm not the only one!
thanks for the confirmation sherrilee
Tim & sherrilee
Maybe we should start blogging about what it is like when technology lets us down! "Has your computer ever frustrated you?" I can take ordinary setbacks in good humor, but computer misconduct sends me howling in fury and eager to seek revenge.
Who does RH think it is, Microsoft? I hear you Steve!
And no 7am playing of that traditional cowboy song When Prairie Sun Rises Out of the Hay either! What's up with that? Did the Easter Bunny run off with Dale?
i'm with you steve.this is not ok. if the bad guys ever want to get us all they have to do is throw a wrench into our technology. the world doesn't know what to do if the cell phone, computer etc. goes bad. and if it is that way with us how about the kids today?
I heard the prairie song, but still no blog :( I've actually had to work this morning, haha
this would be funny if dale were on as the coffee got spilled on the blog computer that caused us all to be lost in techno neverland
he would talk us through it. come on mike you can do it
what do you do for work alanna and where in mi?
Thanks for playing Varttina, Dale! It always picks up my morning when I hear them :)
Are you guys sure Mike is there???
Perhaps he is suffering from jelly bean overdose or maybe Jasper staged a coup and locked out all humans!
i am serious about how messed up we would all be if the techno lines went down. i am certain america could be beat in a heartbeat if the ability to throw a signal blocker up to knock out thepower to the computers, phones cable tv's etc. america would be lost.
Are you certain you heard it Alana? It doesn't appear on the song listing, though maybe there is a gap. Mike, give us some idea what's gong on please. It's eerie listening.
Yep, pretty frustrating. This did happen once before, and they figured it out. I suppose I could copy the essay into here, but it just wouldn't feel right. Soon?
On top of that, our computer often takes 5 minutes or so when I navigate from place to place on the RH site...
Count me in as disappointed - I was looking forward to today's guest blog. Sigh.
(And don't get me started on technology frustrations - I am now on my third - yes third - replacement laptop since the hard drive failed on my old one...and that computer's hard drive was replaced at least three times before the maker of said computer, which shall not be named, gave me the first replacement computer. Bah. It's been since August since I have had a reliable computer. I hope this one works better.)
Did I make this up, or did Dale refer to a guest blog by Barbara that was about nicknames?
wow - yeah, Barbara i R post your essay so we can enjoy it!! good morning, All
OK, and if you've already answered this, go ahead and repeat -- it was written before I knew about "Names Week."
I was born Barbara Ann Britson. It was 1948, there were a lot of Barbaras in that era. There were always 2 or 3 Barbaras in my classroom or Brownie troop, so we might be called Barbara B, Barbara S, etc. And as an adult it was the same – a group of 8 or 10 folk dancers around my age and three of us were Barbara. Of course, some people resorted to nicknames.
At home I was known as Barby by my mom, and my dad called me Barb or Barbadino. Various school nicknames included Barbwire, Babs, Barbarella, and then the Beach Boys et al. did the delightful Ba-Ba-Baaahh Ba-Bah-ber Ann. In college I was Brits. For a while when he was little, my son called me Barber; my step son knows me as Babbyra.
In the 90s I joined a very small (4 of us) business consulting group where I was replacing the front desk person, also named Barbara. I just gave up and became Abby (a favorite “play name” from childhood, and an anagram of Barby if you take out the r). This worked brilliantly while I was there, and ever since it has been my personal rule that if any group I join contains more than 25 % Barbaras, I flip into Abby mode. I also have the odd habit, when asked my name, of hesitating and figuring out if I should be Barbara or Abby in the new setting!
I feel sure that others on this blog have had some interesting aliases – heck, some of you change your blog name almost hourly! What are some of the more interesting or colorful nicknames you (or someone dear to you) have had?
Tim - I'm a Civil Engineer and I work in Rock, MI. It's in the Upper Peninsula.
Kim - I definitely heard it. I was singing along, haha

nicknames huh?
did anyone hear the show on sunday? i have been wanting to catch molly maher for a while, i will try to catch the 6pm monday version, or wednsday as dale just said.
rock sounds like apiece of americana. what is the high school football team called?
it nice to see your name in the blog every so often alanna.
why to work early today?
Greetings! This is definitely weird. I generally don't have too many people with my name in same place, but it's happened, mainly at work. The front desk person at one place I replaced had my name as well.
At the grocery story I work at, my first boss has an ex-wife and a current wife with my name. That was bizarre.
For nicknames, usually my family calls me Jo, Jo-Jo or MoJo -- only my Dad could call me Joannie. In karate, my instructor calls me Jensen, JJ or Jensenator when I get real intense.
I'm a Kimberly, one of the first I think because I'm among the oldest of those I know of. I'm usually Kim, but Kimberly in formal things and paperwork. AKA Kimber, Kimster, Kimmy (by kids), and Kat (my married initals if I'd had the grace to take his name!).
All names are pretty fashionable I think, though some more than others. Does anyone know any today namesd Mildred or Louise or (other old time name) of a grandmother?
thanks, Barbara i R - thanks so much for your essay. great subject to talk about and i like your flexibility to switch to Abby. nice idea. i was born in 1946, and should have been Louis but unfortunately...... i've been called barbie (i really don't like that now, but that sticks w/ old friends), barb, bobby, shorty, and i really, really tried to get "babs" to stick when i was a teenager but it didn't. many of the kids called me "cushions" (for obvious reasons) when i was a kid - none do now (that i know of, but still could :-) my husband calls me Pook or Pookie or Peeper just to be crazy. the majority of my friends up here are either quite a bit younger or older than i, so i don't have to deal with any other Barbs right now. my favorite nicknames are from the era before WWII - my mother had friends w/ nicknames like "squeaker" or "pooper" or "heinie" and Steve's mom was "Mugs" and his dad was "Buck" good, solid nicknames.
thanks for posting, Barbara, uh, Abby :-)
I'm not sure Rock has a school, let alone a football team, haha. It's a tiny town in the middle of nowhere. I actually start work at 7 every morning now. After being unemployed for 6 months, and now in my third week back to work (at a different place of employment), it's hard getting up so early every day.
Thanks Tim, it's nice to be back :)
Hey come on, Tim, it's not as "meaty" as some things, but could be fun -- but only if you'll join in. It'll be funnier if the photos ever get posted.
Sorry about the double post.
my uncle paul was an interesting guy. he was the practical joker that would place a wake up call in your hotel room for you at 3 am if you ever went to the bathroom or ran out to the car for a second or for any reason left him alone in there for a minute.
he had a name he left at all restaurants etc . it was joe barsocky. there was never an explaination or discussion. they talked about it at his funeral about how that was just his sense of humor.
my lat name in real life is jones. when i go to the restaraunt line name taker i will give them mahaskowitz as a regular offering and watch them squirm to spell it correctly. i tell them just to do it phonetically seeing as they are the ones who have to call me. if they get too frustrated i tell them just to use jones
Cynthia warps into Cindy or Cyndi, of course, and I was both, but mostly Cindy through my childhood and teen years. Started calling myself Cynthia after college.
My father who wanted sons called me "Duke" -- I have no idea where it came from...since I had reddish hair as a child, my uncle called me Rooster or Carrot Top....(though in actuality carrot tops are green, yes?)
Thanks, Barbara for re-posting your guest blog..glad to know it isn't just me who was getting frustrated looking for it.l
Better Monday to y'all!
barbara, i had that posting form the earlier that steve thought he remembered your topic as nicknames. it just happened to show up two seconds after your posting . or the first of your postings. i enjoyed your jim this mornig. i had to do al ittle sherrileeing when i was writing to her too
Just to prove I'm mere, but I won't be on much this week I expect.I am managing workshops this week, picky work and a lot of folks wait until the last minute to register or just walk into workshops we canceled (just got that call).
Saw buds on almost everything on my ride in this morning and some leaves. Lots of green grass. All good signs for me.
There are no nicknames for Clyde or my sister Cleo (no, it is not short for Cleopatra). Our last name does not lend itself well to nicknames either. Except I was Mr. B., sometimes B, from 1969 to about 81, my heavy yearbooking years. When students facebook me I tell them to call me Clyde but the ones of that era we have left as Mr. B or B, which is very noce somehow.
Oh I get it, Tim - just reread through all the comments. I'm little touchy today.. :)
cynthia, i have an aunt who is very unflexible named cynthia and if i wnat to get a rise out ouf her i will introduce her as my aunt cindy or refer to her that way. i think i must be the only one. it also just occurred to me that a girl on my daughters basketball team is named thea and her mother is cynthea , i never put two and two together before.
my ex wife was from a very german family wher the daughters were named helma, thusnelda, and i forget the third one but it was right up there. one christmas helma was discussing her sister nelda, " we call her that because her name is thusnelda" was her side comment. my sister said " yeah that makes sense. i like that a lot better than thus" well my mother in law didn't have much of a sense of humor but you would have thought a personal attack had just occurred.
i kind of like thus. what do you think?
Wow! When I logged off at home, there were just the 2 comments from Tim and me and look at us now. I guess in addition to all the other great things that we are, we RH'ers are very flexible. No blog where it belongs? We go where we can!
Thanks Barbara for the nice essay. I spent my formative years are Sherri. Then in 8th grade, decided I wanted to "connect w/ my heritage" by using my middle name as well (father, aunt, grandfather, etc. all had doublenames). So I became Sherri Lee. Then a couple of years later, SherriLee and then finally in college Sherrilee, which I made legal in my twenties. But the only nickname I've ever acquired was from my baby sister (17 years younger), for whom "Sherrilee" was too big a mouthful. So it got shortened to "She", which still holds to this day for close friends and family!
Thanks Heartlanders for picking up the blog this morning, even in a funny place.
barbara, i understand. thanks to barb for the simple solution of how to fix the snafu. i hope my wonderful blog makes it. i would know how to recall how to find the thing i sent dale. i could do it but it would make my brain do a hard start at early am and that hurts.
clyde, just bring your aircard and laptop to the regiatration table and noodle us up a poem or two while you check everyone in. i love that you are biking already. good for you.
i have buds on my hackberries and i need to do something substantial about that this year.
tim--I don't go to the workshops--they are all over the state. I handle the details from my office. My "partner" does the workshops and I keep him constantly updated on registrations and handle other related details. I am so office-bound I have not owned a lapttop in years.
I have been outdoor riding since 3/23.
Love the pre-recorded Dale who clearly doesn't know that the blog is missing from it's regular spot! Makes me giggle a little. But quietly since I'm in my cube farm now....
When I was growing up I was shy. I didn't hang around other kids my age much, and if I had to do so I had ways of melting into the background so nobody would remember if I had been there or not.
Guess what? Nobody gives that kind of kid a nickname. By the time I got to high school, I saw the absence of a nickname as proof I was as bland as water. Now and then I would invent a nickname for myself and try to get others to use it, but everybody could tell these were fakes. I wasn't interesting enough to merit a nickname.
In terms of giving nicknames, I'm about as bad as GW Bush. I've invented countless names for our pets ("Pippin" became "Piggity Poppin Poodle Poo"). My daughter Molly is Muppet or Molliwog or Moggins. Maybe for my birthday this year I'll get a good nickname.
Barb in Blackhoof, you're a Barbara Ann too, right. A song for us. Thanks, Dale, wherever you are.
clyde, i saw that you started riding 10 days ago and remember the blog about that one real cold morning. gets your heart started. good to know you are there getting the work done. are the workshops for teachers on spring break or is that too much dedication to expect? i would assume they are just back and off to the workshops. clydearideareeno doesn't seem to be a perfect fit but it is an effort anyhow. enjoy the spring mornings
When there is a will. Heartlanders will find a way! I love you guys!
Morning! Thanks Barbara (Abby?) for your fun posting about names. There are 10 kids in my family, and we all have very formal names, mine being Teresa. We were never called these names in every day life, tough. Dad said, "When you reach adulthood you may want to use 'Teresa', you may find it is too childish to be called 'Teri'." Great idea in theory, but in practice it didn't work so well; after 20 years of being known to family and friends as Teri, I didn't switch to Teresa when I reached the age of majority.
Co-workers are often surpised to learn my legal name and have even hung up on callers asking for Teresa; "No one by that name works here, sorry". I also came under scrutiny by Northwest Airlines (remember them?) when my husband booked a ticket for me using Teri instead of Teresa.
Alanna - I'm sure I have driven through Rock, MI. We lived in Negaunee, MI for eight years and Calumet for two. How many inches of snow this year?
Morning random 'make it up' people... I love how we'll just jump on the last blog and make it work.
RH has truly arrived; we can run the place by ourselves if we have too! Hah!
Never had much for nicknames... my first real job (pressing suit coats for a formal wear warehouse) a lady there started calling me 'Spanky' for no reason what so ever... She did make a reference to him being one of the 'Little Rascals' but she didn't know me enough to know if I was or not...
Lately for whatever reason several people have called me 'Benny' -- which is not my preference... haven't been 'Benny' since my elementary school principal called me that. And the school bus driver back about then too.
Used to be 'Benji' to the family...
Busy day here too...
Later!
Periods when there should be commas, apologies to the hard core English Majors out there. My entry goes live Thursday so be kind Heartlanders!
hey stevareeno, when is your birthday?
Teri - If you've ever driven down M35 to Escanaba, you went through Rock. The average snowfall around here was only 170 inches. Not as much as normal, but it was still a nice winter :) I've lived in Houghton, Hancock, and Ishpeming where the Lake Effect snow got pretty bad. Now I live in Gwinn, and it doesn't seem to hit as hard.
Aaron--I am I suppose the most hardcore English person on here. I make more mistakes than anyone else with my muscle control issue. But this is a blog; may all who care aobut such things go write letters--with a fountain pen--on foolscap.
One of my exstudents on facebook was called Sparky in HS and clearly is trying to change it to Lee, but his classmates on facebook are having none of it. Sparky is odd for a 55 year old.
Teri - Husband grew up with the nickname of "Happy", to the point that when the Terrace Theater where he worked called asking for Michael, his dad told them, "Sorry, no one here by that name." His wife reminded him about a son he had by that name...
Barb - re: last post, I was referring to the Beach Boys' "Barbara Ann" that Dale/Jasper played just before 9, but it didn't show up on the playlist.
Waiting for some info and then can handle the workshop detials.
Is cool how we took this over. But hope Mike is all right.
Alanna: as a former resident of the North Shore of Lake Superior in MN, we went often to the UP and loved it. I long to be back in the Porkies but doubt I will get there. One of the berst photoes I ever took is of Presque Ilse River. Best pasties anywhere--Red Onion Pasty Shop in Ishpeming. My mouth is watering.
Well, that is an amazing effort by all of you who managed to keep the blog going this way. I just checked, a little while ago, and noticed all the comments on the blog that is where the guest blog should be.
My mother called me Jimmy. As a sub teacher I told the students they could call me Mr. T if they had trouble with my last name that begins with T.
Just so you know, Barbara , your guest blog just showed up on my RSS reader for Trial Ballon with an apology from Julia Shenkler for not getting it up on the website in time.
If Dale checks the blog at that location he is going to be completely puzzled by the lack of participation! I might enter a post there to pass the word that the discussion thread on nicknames is under the American Showcase heading.
Clyde - I love the North Shore as well. Growing up in southern Minnesota, you get a completely different appreciation for the Great Lakes :) The Red Onion Pasty Shop is still open, it just has a different name...and they deliver, haha. Here's their website: http://www.dobberspasties.com/v2/about_dobbers_pasties.php
Enjoy!
As for the nicknames, I've had many: Lanna, Lon Lon, Lans, Grammalanna, Fred (my dad...), and many more. For some reason, my younger brother got some very interesting ones: J Peks, The Constable, Fred (again, our dad, haha). His nicknames came from his roommates though. With a Jerod, Jared and Jerat all living in the same house, it gets confusing. Nicknames are needed.
Clyde We can get to the Presque Isle from my cabin with a determined drive. What a lovely area! When I visited the river we walked through the site of a deer yard (deer wintering area) with many skeletons. And now my mouth is set for a pasty.
My given name is Stephen, but nobody ever used that except authorities when I was in trouble. I've published all my books under Steve because that seems less pretentious. It didn't make sense to be Steve all the time except when speaking to readers. Steve seemed friendlier, and if you buy my books you ARE my friend!
I have never liked my name, and I have never liked any nickname associated with it. I have been called Nae or Nae-Nae. There's not much else except Rennie or Reenie. I lived in Canada when Rene Levesque was in office, and it was weird to have my name pronounced like his was. My husband's name is Chris, and we call him Kiffey, which is an Irish diminutive of his name. Our daughter gets called Annabelle or Annabanna, neither of which she likes-Her best friend, also an Anna, is over a lot, so we either call them by their entire names or else Thing One or Thing Two so they know who is being spoken to, I love this blog and its community-I think it's Jasper's doing and Mike is tied up in a corner of the studio.
Thanks for the info Teri, but what is that "RSS reader" thingy? Good idea to post directions to the blog conversation...
Renee - I love "Thing One and Thing Two"...
I have been Anna Banana off and on for most of my years. Full first name is Anna-Maria, which my older brother could not pronounce when I came home from the hospital (he was four), so it came out as something like "Anna Ria"...which sounds more like an unpleasant illness than a name for a baby girl. Family shortened it to Ria - a few friends have picked up on that (including one who mostly uses it when I'm deep in thought to catch my attention when I don't answer to "Anna").
The other two childhood nicknames that are still used by specific friends are Fozzie (as in Fozzie Bear), and Rosencrantz (my Guildenstern now lives on the East coast).
Since we seem capable of blogging on our own...wonder what would happen if we could hack into JASPER?...
Teri... I also am wondering. What is RSS reader? I'm still not seeing anything where today's blog is supposed to be. But I'm still getting a real kick out of blogging here today!
Steve - I think you just got yourself a nickname from tim. Keep in mind - it may take a while to get used to...
Alanna - like your dad: some people are just good at GIVING nicknames. A brother-in-law of mine can find a good nickname for anyone, i.e. Vin becomes VinLouie; his baby daughter was Fartblossom (but just for a short time).
If the regular blog never gets fixed, I guess we can just keep blogging forever right here. I can see it: Americana Showcase (20,109 posts)
I cannot see the blog anywhere either and am at sea about an RSS reader, but I am a technoidiot.
My theory is that HAL took over Jasper, who is tied up in the corner of cyberspace and Mike Pengra is floating around the moons of Saturn in a capsule with classical music playing in the background.
I found it on the "Guest Bloggers" link on the side under categories.
This is fun having so many entries on Sunday's blog.
Yes, if you scroll to the top of this page and click on Guest Bloggers, there it is (no photos though) with 2 comments, Julia's and Teri's directing them here.
I think this is a good definition from Wikipedia describing what an RSS feed is:
RSS (most commonly expanded as "Really Simple Syndication") is a family of web feed formats used to publish frequently updated works—such as blog entries, news headlines, audio, and video—in a standardized format.
What that means is that as soon as a blog entry is published on a website I subscribe to (Trial Baloon) under a new topic (eg: Knack for Nicknames), it is posted on my RSS feed list - which for me is Google Reader. So, when Julia Schrenkler posted Brbara's blog entry, I saw the notification in my reader and clicked on it, which brought me directly Barbara's posting. I am not a techie by any stretch of the imagination, but this is a very nice feature if you are one who follows specific writers who blog. Google makes it easy!
Teri - thanks for the RSS info - but i don't see TB on the list of MPR choices for RSS... i don't really need this since i am not at the computer most of the day, but was just curious....
Clyde - i love your comment about writing letters, fountain pens and fool's cap. ha, ha!
man, the kiddos are wild today! they were way up on the stacked bales, leaping off and doing that weird little twist/flip thing with their hind legs. so fun to see them doing so well. all three does doing well also. and the Gentlemen. good day.
Ba Ba Baah Ba Ba bra Ann
(i prefer the Regents' version from 1961 :-)
Barb in B... glad to hear the goatling (yes, I know this isn't the right word, but I really like it!) are doing well today. I have to admit, I've been stalking the blog since the babies were born to see how they're doing. Even forced the teenager to come look at the photos over the weekend. She thought they were cute but was more concerned about how weird I am!
With a name like Sally, and growing up in the 70's, all I could think of was Charlie Brown's little sister. I wanted a more exotic name...
My mom called me Sal, (on the rare occassion Sallis - not sure where that came from?), but the kids at school couldn't do too much harm with Sally. Today it's a rather uncommon name, so I'm good with it.
I do like "Sal", it makes me think of a big old Italian guy spinning a pizza over his head. HEY SAL!
ha ha!
Ha... Sally, you just brought back a great memory for me. My middle sister's name is Sally. When I was in high school we got our first Irish Setter and named her Callie (short for Irish Calleen). Anyway, within just a couple of days we realized that we had a problem, Sally and Callie just sound too much alike and EVERYONE was confused.
Of course, we had to change the dog's name, but instead of sitting down and thinking up somehing more appropriate, we just used the other part of her name... Irish. Brilliant, no? But that's what we called her until the end of her days!
Sshheerrrriilleeee-if your teenagers don't think you are weird, you are weird.
My father named all animals by their color, if we let him. After my wife Sandy and I were married, he got a sand colored dog which he named Sandy. Lots of confusion resulted, like the time he told my sister that he had to take Sandy to the doctor. Ny sister had the wrong image of who Sandy was until he said he had to hold Sandy while she got a shot.
Sally - great to have you hop on the blog. I have a favorite cousin Sally that I've told stories of here recently... And isn't Sally sometimes a nickname for Sarah?
Sherilee - When our teenager told us we were wierd (and this was frequently), we would say "Thank you!" And I too like calling them goatlets or goatlings - seems to suit them better.
I tried posting this once, got lost...
Barb - Maybe I should say that I chose Google Reader (the RSS feeder) from the task bar at the top of Google's Gmail page. If you don't find Reader listed across the top, click on the little arrow next to the list of tasks and you can pick it from the drop down menu. Once you pick 'Reader', it will give you the option to 'Add a Subscription'. I think that is where you can enter Trial Baloon, or Dale Connelly, or maybe there is a goat blogger out there???
Hi Bloggers,
I just flew in from the rings of Saturn (and boy, are my arms tired!) and see we had a screw-up today. Thanks for picking up our slack, everyone. One too many chocolate eggs for me, I guess.
Dang -- I was in Iowa and missed out on the excitement! All these posts Re the blog glitch are a riot to read... as well as geekishly stimulating and moderately educational.
My big brother, Curt, and I used to throw nicknames back and forth. I liked calling him Dirt and his favorite for me was Donnorrhea. We're still very close.
Great displaced entry and WAY TO PERSEVERE, Ba ba la in R!
Glad you could make it, Mike.
I'm a Barbara Ann from the 40's and had the same nicknames as the other Barbs. For a couple of years in high school I was called Torque or Torgie for my last name. My family still calls me Barbie.
Wow, there are 3 Barbara Anns on this blog!
That was great fun, everyone, thanks to you first few people for starting it up -- it didn't occur to me to use Sunday's space until I saw that it didn't say "Americana Showcase (0) " anymore...
This was an error on my part, and I'm sorry, Barbara. It was my fault alone, and I hope you'll accept my apology.
-Julia
