Harry Manx & Tales of Outer Space

Posted at 6:00 AM on October 3, 2009 by Dale Connelly (9 Comments)

Tonight on Radio Heartland on Minnesota Public Radio News stations, I'll talk with Harry Manx about his latest recording, Bread & Buddha.

I think of Harry as an international man of mystery. He avoided any discussion of the name he was given at birth, but the moniker "Manx" suits him since he is a Manxman, an islander, originally from the Isle of Man. In fact, he has a string of islands in his history. These days he makes his home on Saltspring Island in British Columbia, Canada. But there's no isolation- he's connected to the larger world through his music and especially his use of the Mohan veena, a 20 string sitar/guitar created in India by Vishwa Mohan Bhatt.

In hour two we'll leave Earth completely and explore space with otherworldly songs from Peter Mayer, Brave Combo, David Bowie, Harry Nilsson and Aimee Mann to name just a few. Musicians are artist/pioneers - it's part of the job description to be ahead of the crowd, and some of them left this planet behind long ago. We'll dig into the library for some close encounters with green dogs, flying saucers, purple people eaters and extra terrestrial invaders who look a lot like us.

That's tonight from 9 to 11 pm on Radio Heartland on the stations of Minnesota Public Radio News.

I'll be interested to hear what's in the second hour. I recently came across a Donovan song from his 1973 "Cosmic Wheels" album. The song is called "Intergalactic Laxative" - kind of an anachronism now but if you listen to it realizing it was written just after the Apollo moon landings, it's kind of humorous.

Thank you for the Harry Manx interview, I missed it during the RH broadcast a couple weeks ago. He's one of my favorites.
